 "Tis good so far" 2010-02-15
By EDW (Morenci, MI)
Have the 500 GB (HDDR500E04XL) for about two weeks with no problems although the USB cable would really be better if it was even 6 inches longer. It's being used on a iMac for Time Machine. I didn't even look at the software stored on it. I just let the Mac erase it and format it to what it wanted. It managed to write 51 GB in less than forty minutes. The hourly backups are 100 MB and takes about a minute or two and does not slow other programs down. It's quiet and has not heated up. I am running the Toshiba off of a powered USB hub. I don't if this makes a difference or not. The main reason I decided on external drive is that most everything is either too big or too time consuming to back up on DVD's and CD's. I wanted a USB powered drive because I didn't another cord to plug in. The small slim size also worked out well for the desk arrangement. So far I am very satisfied with this product so far.

 "Didn't work" 2010-02-14
By Crusoe (OH, USA)
Nothing happened when I plugged it in (Win XP Dell laptop with a USB 2.0 4-port extension). Restarted and tried again - same story. The laptop just doesn't see this drive (the drive's LED lights up, though). I'm returning it and will not buy another Toshiba drive.

 "Very good stuff" 2010-02-14
By Slavo C (Warsaw, Poland)
Pros: Very good stuff, lightweight, efficient, high transfer speeds, no heat even when long working hours

Cons: For some reasons sometimes transfer vary from 30 Mbytes/s to 4 and then back to 30, especially at the end of the transfer

Overall : 9/10

 "My first external drive" 2010-02-13

Decided to finally get an external drive now that we have multiple computers with our main one being a laptop. Worked fairly quickly and is actually smaller than I thought it would be. Got it at a decent price, would recommend for just about anyone.

"Toshiba 320 GB External Drive" 2010-02-13
By Kay Wolman
This is the second drive I've bought from Toshiba. They are easy to set up and I use mine with Apple's Time Machine software for backups. Works great, is usually very quiet (occasionally I've heard a hum), and the size makes it easy to carry from one machine to another. No reason to lose the contents of your hard drive when there is a failure when storage is this fast and cheap.

 "Worst Product Ever Purchased" 2010-02-03
By A. Inam
I have been buying through amazon.com for many years but this is the first time I was compelled enough to write a review because my experience was so bad with this company and this product that I really felt it important to let other potential buyers know about it. Please do pay attention to the bad reviews on this product (about 22% all reviews so far).

This has to be the worst product I have ever purchased on amazon.com. Not only the product is worthless but the company and their customer service is totally against every customer service principal imaginable. If I was a lawyer, I'd drag this company out to the courts for wrongful and misleadig business practices. Here are things any potential buyer should be aware of before even thinking about buying any Iomega product:

1. The product is absolutely not reliable. The drive crashed unexpectedly within weeks of purchasing.
2. You have to pay to talk to a customer support agent.
3. They only offer a live chat with customer support but it is useless. They just copy and paste from scripts.
4. Their warranty is written by the sleaziest of lawyers. If the drive fails, you have to pay to ship it back to them (and lose all your data) and they will replace with only a remanufactured one, i.e., another drive that has failed before.
5. Once they replace your new drive with a remanufactured one, your one-year warranty on the original product gets reduced to 90 days.
6. They constantly promote their very expensive data recovery service during the "online chat", as if these bad drives were manufactured and shipped with misleading warranty to pimp their data recovery service.

 "Great product so far" 2010-02-02
By K. Harris (California)
So far so good. Have had this 500 GB external drive for about 3 months now, and it does just what I need. Stores a lot, great for backing up files and allows me to transfer files with ease to all other computers. Doesn't get too warm, unless it's in a hot environment to begin with, even then it's not bad at all. And no noise whatsoever!

Only issue I've had, is that sometimes I can't eject the device. When I try to safely eject, it shows error message that it is still in use...but it's not! I haven't been able to figure out if it is something I am doing wrong, or a glitch in the product. Otherwise, great buy!

"Don't Get Iomega hard drive for a MAC!" 2010-02-02
By NotaMacGenius (New York, NY USA)
This hard drive was purchased for backing up an iMac and it may just be my mistake to get a drive that must be reformated for MAC. Using Disk Utility on my iMac was impossible. I then tried my older PowerBook which let me format the drive for an older MAC system recognized by the iMac (after many error messages and false starts on both machines). Then I began a back up of my iMac using Super Duper. It took over two days! The USB 2.0 is much too slow for the amount of data on the iMac hard drive (which was only half full - a one terabyte drive). I now have a back up which I hope will work if the iMac goes down. The only plus was I spent half of what the Apple Store people recommend, but now I will have to buy one of their drive recommendations just to feel confident that I have a solid back up.

"Cavalry 500 GB USB External Hard Drive" 2010-01-30
By Cliff Dearing (Hamilton, TX USA)
Have absolutely no complaints about the product. A monkey could use it and it does what it says. My complaint lies in whoever boxed it. MAYBE the casing itself. When I received mine, the insides of the hard drive had shifted so that the plastic back (where cords plug in, etc)had broken away from the rest. The screws were still screwed in. Either those screws were tightened too much, stressing the plastic or the product wasn't handled carefully enough when it was boxed. The packaging was, at best, not quite what you'd expect with a sensitive piece of electronics. Too much play between the product and its cushioning protection.

I didn't return it for two reasons: 1) It still worked just fine. The product itself is a fine product. 2) I had waited excitedly for it and didn't want to go through another wait for its replacement.

 "A reliable drive" 2009-02-20
By C. Thompson
I use this drive as a primary backup device on my iMac G5. It worked fine out of the box and has been reliable for nearly a year. It is quiet and runs cool.

I consider it a good value and would buy another. I would be pleased to give a 5-star review, but the screws shipped for mounting the stand did not match the holes. I simply stand it on edge and it works fine.
